The Magic Flute - Burgtheater Vienna

In 1791, the heavily indebted Mozart completed, together with his friend Schikaneder, the story of two lovers who find each other amidst the battle against dark forces, thus allowing the utopia of a realm of reason and humanity to emerge, where colorful birds also have their place. In a theater in the suburbs of Vienna, "Die Zauberflöte" (The Magic Flute), which is now featured in almost all major opera houses around the world, premiered. 232 years later, a traveling theater troupe brings its own version of the opera to the stage. The "Kratky-Baschik-Zaubertheater" is broke and urgently needs the perfect entertainment show. For this, the troupe is willing to use any means necessary: the sacred composition is rearranged, Mozart's motifs transform into songs of various styles, and the rewritten libretto is shared among just six performers, each of whom must take on multiple roles. In a sunken world of vaudeville, variety, and the dark Prater street theater, perhaps the most daring reinterpretation of the world's most famous opera emerges. Actor and musician Nils Strunk, along with author Lukas Schrenk, a three-member band, and the ensemble, creates a joyful, musical reflection on the magic of the stage and the power of togetherness. Mozart and Schikaneder would have turned in their graves.
