At the Destination - Academy Theater Vienna

On an early, seemingly peaceful morning, a mother mercilessly berates the previous evening's theater performance, the premiere of a young playwright titled "SAVE YOURSELF, WHO CAN." The daughter remains silent, brewing tea and packing, as they are about to leave the city villa and head to their summer residence by the sea. Before their departure, the mother reflects not only on the terminally ill state of theater and the world but also on the exorbitant craftsman's bill, the undervalued family foundry, and the two ghosts that still fuel her anger and shame with their absent presence: her deceased husband and her small, severely disabled son, who will never grow up. She furiously celebrates her greed for meaning and fulfillment, and not least her desire to perform, as she has invited a guest to the summer residence for the first time: the young theater author from last night. Thomas Bernhard's play premiered in Salzburg in 1981 and oscillates between wit and madness. Fueled by cognac, sharp wit, masochism, and world anxiety, the mother drives herself and her surroundings into a dizzying, drunken plunge into language.
