Lower Austria is a discovery! Many artists have appreciated and shaped the local natural and cultural landscapes over the centuries. They painted or drew in nature, capturing everyday motifs in genre paintings and portraits. They created landscape, devotional, and moral images, without which we would know far less about life in Lower Austria today.
JOURNEY THROUGH LOWER AUSTRIA
The collection presentation geographically leads to six places and regions, covering more than five centuries in time. Four altar wings by an anonymous artist, referred to as the "Master of the Florian Winkler Epitaph," were created in the late 15th century. The most recent works in the exhibition date from the 20th century and are by famous personalities such as Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka, who were born in Tulln and Pöchlarn, respectively. All the works in the exhibition share a connection to regions of Lower Austria or were created there.
The artistic journey through Lower Austria begins in Plankenberg and runs along the Danube from Pöchlarn to Tulln and then to Langenzersdorf. The fact that the Wachau enjoys the status of a UNESCO World Heritage Site as a cultural landscape is also demonstrably due to art. Other stops include Krems, Wiener Neustadt, and the beautiful Piestingtal.
MASTERPIECES OF AUSTRIAN ART HISTORY
All works come from the art collection of the State of Lower Austria and were created by world-renowned artists from Austria such as Martin Johann Schmidt, Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller, Tina Blau-Lang, and Olga Wisinger-Florian.
Among the masterpieces of Austrian mood impressionism is Emil Jakob Schindler's "Poplar Alley after the Storm" from 1892. A highlight of Biedermeier realism is Friedrich Gauermann's painting "Deer Pursued by a Lynx" (1831). Representing a major work of expressionism is Anton Hanak's "Last Man" from 1917.
