He is a Montague, she is a Capulet – and their families have been separated by a bitter feud for generations. But from the moment Romeo and Juliet first lock eyes, it is clear to both that their love is unbreakable, even in a world filled with hatred. They meet secretly at night and marry in secret. However, sooner than expected, new personal happiness collides with old, entrenched circumstances: When Romeo asks his enemy Tybalt for peace, the argument flares up again, leading to the first fatalities. A series of unfortunate events drives the two lovers and their families toward a tragic fate.

Over 400 years ago, William Shakespeare described the archetype of unconditional young love that transcends social boundaries. Director Thomas Reichert, who has been associated with the Salzburg Marionette Theatre through several productions since 2006, focuses on the timeless aspects of the tragedy in his new production. His stage adaptation tells the story, along with its tragic and comedic elements, in a contemporary language, without overlooking the poetry of Shakespeare. In a large, reduced stage space and through a combination of concealed and open puppetry, the audience experiences a moving theater evening with Romeo and Juliet.
