Christmas Special Post Office Oberndorf

Special post office and Christmas stamp for Christmas mail! Important for stamp collectors and visitors alike. Since 1968, the "Silent Night" special post office has been held annually at the Bruckmannhaus on Silent Night Square. Alongside Christkindl in Steyr, this is the second most important in Austria. For many philatelists, this special post office is a significant annual event.

Peace song "Silent Night! Holy Night!"
What began as a simple Christmas carol in 1818 in Oberndorf has become one of the most famous songs in the world – and a quiet yet compelling message of peace. With its simple melody and touching words, "Silent Night! Holy Night!" represents hope, humanity, and the quiet power of peace – beyond borders, nations, and ideologies.

Particularly the 4th and 5th verses carry a profound message of peace. A clear counter-proposal to war and national division is drawn. Jesus embraces the peoples of the world – not individual nations, but all people, regardless of origin, language, or borders. The anger of the world gives way to love.

This message also had political significance: In 1941, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Winston Churchill sang "Silent Night! Holy Night!" together in the White House in Washington. This event inspired the philosopher Leopold Kohr, who had emigrated from Oberndorf, to interpret the song as an expression of Austria's cultural independence from Germany. As a symbol of a small, peace-loving Austria.

In 2011, "Silent Night! Holy Night!" was added to the national list of intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO and is therefore much more than a Christmas song: It is a call for humanity. Then as now!
