TOURDATA

Museumsplatz 1, 3500 Krems an der Donau

Why is the Virgin Mary often depicted with a lily? Why does Eve pick an apple? And why was a tulip the cause of the first stock market crash in the 17th century? Works from the Gothic period to the present tell of the symbolic significance of plants and demonstrate how deeply nature is embedded in our cultural concepts and practices.

Plants as Cultural Symbols
Plants provide us with food and give us air to breathe. They not only enable our material existence, but they have also long been carriers of meanings and messages. In many cultures, they symbolize love, life, death, or transience.

Through works by significant Austrian and international artists, as well as cultural-historical objects and natural science evidence, the exhibition presents the cultural history of around 18 selected edible, useful, and ornamental plants. It describes how the origin, distribution, and use of plants have changed the world, and why wars have been fought over plants or people enslaved. The apple, lily, sunflower, and cotton are featured in the exhibition, as are wine, tobacco, and imperial crown. The imperial crown became a symbol of power and wealth during the Baroque period. In the gardens of European nobility, it was planted as a sign of their status and influence. Its majestic appearance and demanding care underscore the high status of those who could afford this plant.

Appreciation of Nature
The exhibition is a visually powerful homage to the plant world. It addresses the importance, significance, and influence of plants on human life and aims to contribute to a deeper appreciation of nature as a whole.
