New Yorker Joe Bradley (born 1975) is known for his diverse works that are situated between figuration and abstraction. The exhibition at the Kunsthalle Krems includes around 70 pieces from Bradley's recent work, including paintings, drawings, and sculptures. It is the first museum exhibition of the American artist in Austria.
From Matisse to de Kooning
For more than twenty years, Joe Bradley has been working on a multifaceted oeuvre characterized by drawing-comic-like figuration, minimalism, and color field elements. Many of the works also exhibit ironic traits, commonly found in post-conceptual art. His works constantly oscillate between abstract and figurative elements and reference the Western painting tradition, ranging from Henri Matisse to Willem de Kooning. Bradley's most recent paintings testify to a painterly density in impressive color splendor, adorned with graphic accents.
From Irony to Gestural Abstraction
Bradley's early works in the late 1990s are inspired by Nordic-romantic landscape painting. Later, he turns to monochrome painting, with his "Modular Paintings" reminiscent of the minimalist works of Frank Stella and Ellsworth Kelly. From 2010 onwards, large-scale, gestural, and informal paintings emerge, showcasing a blend of abstraction and figuration. His works represent a continuous engagement with the processuality and materiality of painting.
International Exhibitions
Joe Bradley has been exhibited in numerous international museums, including MoMA and the Whitney Museum in New York. His works are part of significant collections, such as the Buffalo AKG Art Museum in New York State and the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris.
