Painting with Rust and Patina

Old iron and copper roofs have inspired many artists to develop a painting technique using rust and patina.

Exciting results can be achieved, for example, with iron powder, gold leaf, pigments, and marble dust. We create textures using paste, stones, metal pieces, paper, and much more. This technique can be applied to many materials, such as canvases, wooden boards, painting cardboard, wooden furniture, and even plastic.

Rust forms on iron through oxidation with oxygen and water; we accelerate the process with patina. We create verdigris using copper or brass paint. The combination of rust color and verdigris produces a particularly striking effect. The allure lies in the experimentation. Oxidation can only be partially controlled, which makes this painting technique especially exciting.
