Thomas Bernhard's novel is perfectly suited for this particular constellation of interpreters: The first-person narrator famously observes from the distance of his armchair a "literary evening gathering" in Vienna's Gentzgasse, waiting for the announced arrival of a Burgtheater actor. Most of the individuals in this gathering are also connected, as their mutual friend Joana, who took her own life, was buried that very afternoon in the village of Kilb. Nicholas Ofczarek will be sitting near or among the musicians, bringing Bernhard's sentences to life, while the Franuis, among others, will be heard performing a specialty that has made them known: the celebration of funeral marches and mourning music.
