Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was 15 years old when he composed his serenade Ascanio in Alba in Milan in 1771 for the wedding of Archduke Ferdinand and Princess Maria Beatrice d'Este. The work is a typical allegory, in which Empress Maria Theresa, the mother of the archduke, is portrayed as the goddess of love, Venus, who brings her son Ascanio together with the right wife. The music of the young Mozart, featuring numerous choruses and arias in the style of opera seria, was very well received by the wedding guests, and the marriage of the prince and princess was to prove happy. The collaboration between conductor Christophe Rousset and his ensemble Les Talens Lyriques with the MusikTheater an der Wien has also been exceedingly fruitful for many years. For Mozart's Ascanio in Alba, he brings a high-caliber cast, which includes sopranos Anna El-Kashem and Rocío Pérez, tenor Alasdair Kent, and Mélissa Petit, who was last seen at the MusikTheater an der Wien in the title role of Roméo et Juliette.
