Those who appreciate the good old Viennese tradition with plenty of charm, but also a touch of morbidity, will surely find what they are looking for on this evening. With beloved classics like "Der g’schupfte Ferdl" and "Tauben vergiften," the Austrian actors and singers Bela Koreny, Karl Markovics, Julia Stemberger, Caroline Frank, Ethel Merhaut, and Wolf Bachofner pay tribute to the Viennese cult musicians and cabaret artists Gerhard Bronner and Georg Kreisler. Among other songs, you will hear "Der Wilde auf seiner Maschin," "Der Papa wird's schon richten," "Wien ohne Wiener," "Chesterfield," and one of the most popular songs, "Wia Glockn." Bela Koreny, the conceptualizer and designer of the program, will accompany on the piano. Profound humor and plenty of wordplay are guaranteed for the evening!
The story of two brilliant songwriters who were friends but became enemies—yet remained very fond of each other: Gerhard Bronner and Georg Kreisler. Both had to leave their homeland as teenagers. They fled and returned. Bronner in 1948, Kreisler in 1955. They earned their first money, as could be expected, through entertainment. The legendary Marietta Bar was one of their shared "cult venues." In 1959, Bronner took over the New Theater at Kärntnertor (until 1966), where the cabaret ensemble celebrated grand successes. Gerhard Bronner wrote hits like "Der g’schupfte Ferdl," "Der Halbwilde," "Der Bundesbahnblues," and "Der Papa wird’s schon richten." After returning to Vienna in 1955, Kreisler primarily performed his chansons at Gerhard Bronner's Marietta Bar. In 1956, he and Bronner leased the Intime Theater in Liliengasse. The paths of the two diverged, but they continually crossed each other artistically. The contrast between the two artists is the tension of the evening. It showcases a century from the perspective of two Viennese who could not have been more different. However, one thing connected them throughout their lives: VIENNA.
