"Romeo Kaltenbrunner - Homesickness"

Romeo has to go home, from Vienna to Upper Austria. Grandma is dying. Again. The journey to his hometown is also a time travel back to his own childhood and youth. He meets his old teenage love again, whom he unfortunately wasn’t allowed to kiss back in school. Her family had forbidden it. Partly because Romeo had the wrong skin color, but mainly because he had too few hectares (Note: none at all). Romeo visits a tent festival back home in the village, where the same band still plays as 15 years ago, and where the same Nazis still want to beat him up as they did 15 years ago. It’s wonderful when some things in life just stay the same. Surrounded by the smell of grilled chicken and slightly drunk from a whole box of Jägermeister, Romeo becomes nostalgic. Should he not go back to Vienna at all, where people are more liberal—but unfortunately also more boring? Isn’t this village his true home? What is home anyway? Can one be proud of their homeland if they don’t know their own father? In his second cabaret program “HEIMWEH” (Homesickness), Romeo Kaltenbrunner talks about growing up in the countryside and what it’s like to look different than what one’s family name and dialect might suggest.
