"Animal Farm"

With the call "All animals are equal," the pigs initiate a revolution alongside all the other animals on the farm. Old Major, the leader of the animal community, urges them to fight against their human exploiters. The revolution is successful. The farm owners are driven away, and the vision of being free and equal seems within reach. However, when Old Major dies, the two dominant pigs, Napoleon and Snowball, take over leadership. It soon becomes clear that the two are abusing their power by granting themselves privileges and claiming positions at the top of a new social order. What began as a utopia of freedom quickly turns into a form of dictatorship. The pigs add a modification to the law of equality that destroys the communal project: "Some animals are more equal than others." George Orwell published "Animal Farm" in 1944 as a warning against Stalinism. In the form of a fable, he insightfully and ruthlessly depicts the susceptibility and corruptibility of humans. Even over 80 years after its publication, "Animal Farm" remains a relevant and revealing text about human nature. Why do systems of power keep repeating themselves? Why are the democratic values based on freedom and equality being questioned again today? Director Jonathan Heidorn, who recently staged Kafka's "The Trial" and Saša Stanišić's "Wolf" at the regional theater, will adapt the famous bestseller for the present with his ensemble, envisioning a possible utopia for our future.
