Japan is known for its contrasts. Due to a period of isolation lasting over 200 years, which lasted until the mid-19th century, the culture developed without outside influences. Thus, the people are still deeply rooted in centuries-old traditions while simultaneously embracing modern technology. In his presentation, Oliver Bolch takes you on a visual journey through the fascinating world of Japan and presents a unique blend of modern vibrancy and centuries-old customs that reflect the magic of this captivating country.
The journey begins in the dynamic capital, Tokyo, where modern Japan, with its stunning skyline and vibrant street culture, meets traditional shrines and temples. In the Greater Tokyo area, we admire the enchanting beauty of cherry blossoms in Kanazawa, the majestic sight of Mount Fuji in all its glory, and watch Japanese macaques bathing in hot springs.
We explore the historic city of Kyoto, which, with its multitude of magnificent temples and shrines, represents the heart of Japanese culture, and experience the festive atmosphere of the Aoi Matsuri Festival, one of Japan's oldest festivals. In Nara and on Miyajima Island, we visit the country's oldest Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines. In the far south of the country, we hike through the rainforest on Yakushima Island, home to 3,000-year-old cedar trees.
We travel to the northernmost of Japan's four main islands and discover the winter wonderland of Hokkaido. Oliver Bolch has photographed the majestic Steller's sea eagles, the graceful Manchurian cranes, and whooper swans in their natural habitat, providing insights into the wildlife of this unique ecosystem. Aside from the unique fauna, deeply snow-covered volcanic landscapes, frozen waterfalls, drifting ice along the coast, small fishing villages, and red Shinto shrines against the white of winter are truly captivating.
