Dramma Giocoso in two acts · Libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte
Murder, seduction, revenge, and punishment – Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's "Don Giovanni" has all the ingredients for a diverse and profound opera experience. Together with librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte, Mozart created one of the most famous operatic works in today's repertoire. Elements of comedy and tragedy intertwine in the "dramma giocoso" surrounding the notorious womanizer Don Giovanni. He leaves a trail of destruction in the lives of the women he encounters, including Donna Anna, Donna Elvira, and the engaged Zerlina. Donna Anna vows revenge for her father's death, which Giovanni commits at the beginning of the opera, while Donna Elvira constantly wavers between love and hate.

Questions of morality, the power of seduction, and the inevitable punishment for transgressions run as central themes throughout the work. In this opera, Mozart succeeds in portraying the characters' emotions deeply and nuanced: Donna Anna's desire for revenge, Donna Elvira's torn feelings between love and anger, and Zerlina's uncertainty between seducibility and loyalty. At the end of the opera, the moral of the story is manifested in a very special way.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791) composed "Don Giovanni" as the third of the "Da Ponte operas," meaning with a libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte. The opera was commissioned by the Prague nobility and premiered in Prague in 1787. Despite the time pressure under which Mozart composed it, he created a work that ideally combines drama and humor and remains a staple of the operatic literature to this day.

Alexandra Liedtke has been accompanying the Salzburg Landestheater for over ten years, bringing lively theater and opera evenings with her productions. Starting from the 2025/2026 season, she will take on artistic responsibility for the opera as the chief director. The First Kapellmeister Carlo Benedetto Cimento is the musical partner for the development of Mozart's score.

The introduction to the work takes place 45 and 30 minutes before the start of the performance.
