"Stranger than the Moon" is a tribute to Bertolt Brecht (1898–1956), one of the most influential theater makers of his time, whose political visions remain relevant to this day. He was a playwright, political thinker, and, along with Helene Weigel, the founder of the Berliner Ensemble. Brecht was also a gifted lyricist. "Stranger than the Moon" weaves Brecht's songs by Hanns Eisler and others with poetry and autobiographical prose into a musically fragmented narrative of life. Diary entries and poems collide with verses and prose; the texts deal with the emergence of an artistic personality, the difficulties of love life, war, exile, and return – as well as death and the relationship between the author and posterity.
