Martin Haselböck on the program of the orchestral matinee: “Franz Liszt adapted the myth of Dr. Faustus in two magnificent orchestral works: he had already encountered Goethe's great poem in 1830, and his long engagement with the text culminated in Liszt's greatest and most significant orchestral composition, his 'Faust Symphony,' which premiered on September 5 in honor of the unveiling of the Goethe-Schiller Monument that still stands there today in Weimar. In this version, we will also hear the masterpiece in Raiding. In 1836, Nikolaus Lenau adapted the Faust material in a melancholic-nihilistic poem. Liszt was much closer to this interpretation, which sees Faust as a weak character manipulated by Mephisto and ultimately driven to suicide. Thus, he composed two splendid orchestral pictures: 'The Nocturnal Procession' – a procession passes by, leaving Faust in despair, and 'The Dance in the Village Tavern' – Mephisto performs an orgiastic dance in the tavern, the well-known First Mephisto Waltz.”
