The former iron ore mining at Grillenberg has been open to visitors as a show mine since 1992. The discovery of a copper smelting site indicates that copper was already being mined at Grillenberg during the late Bronze Age (around 1000 BC). From the 10th century onwards, the extraction of bog iron ore took place. Excavations of smelting furnaces in 1950 provided the first evidence of an iron smelting operation in Lower Austria during the 12th century. Last but not least, the mine tunnels are also a unique ecosystem and habitat for various animal species, including an extremely rare species of bat, the horseshoe bat.
General Information:
The show mine is open from May to October, and there is a guided tour of the mine every Saturday at 2:30 PM (no registration required). Appointments for guided tours can be made at any time. The duration of the tour is approximately 1 hour.
Admission: Adults € 12.00; Children aged 4 to 15 € 7.00.
Warm clothing and sturdy footwear are recommended, as the temperature in the mine is a constant 8°C. Helmets and lights will be provided.
The visit to the show mine is not suitable for individuals with physical disabilities. Dogs are not allowed in the mine.
Access to the Grillenberg show mine is via the district of Werning in the market municipality of Payerbach. Starting from the fire station of the FF-Payerbach, one turns up towards the mine on the opposite side of the street. First, you cross the railway, and then keeping to the right, the path leads up along the signage.
Advance registrations are possible at any time at schaubergwerk@payerbach.at or by phone at 02666/52423-12 (Mon-Fri 8 AM - 12 PM) on weekends and holidays at 0676/4027078.
