The St. Matthew Passion by Johann Sebastian Bach, BWV 244, is one of the most moving works in music history, condensing human suffering, compassion, and hope into an overwhelming musical language. The soloists of the Collegium Vocale Salzburg, the L'Orfeo Baroque Orchestra, Virgil Hartinger as the Evangelist, and Raphael Fingerlos as Jesus intertwine under the direction of Michael Schneider to create a spiritual Gesamtkunstwerk of rare magnitude.
