The Tiger Lillies seem to love Austria. The restlessly touring band, which travels around the globe, hardly misses a year without stopping by for a few performances in the country. In addition to their concert activities, they have repeatedly and very successfully dedicated themselves to the theater stage in a vaudevillian tradition. In recent years, theatrical highlights in Austria have included "Tiger Lillies' Freakshow" and "Woyzeck & The Tiger Lillies" alongside Ben Becker and Christian Kolonovits (honored with the Nestroy Theater Prize).
Their darkly comedic songs portray pimps, prostitutes, thugs, zoophiles, depressed circus clowns, drug addicts, and arsonists as romantic heroes in a crazy world. Well, we are quite familiar with moritat in Austria, especially in Vienna! The genre of street singers has more or less disappeared since the early last century. However, the spirit of songs about murder and mayhem still resonates in many historical alleys and dives. In the 60s, the genre experienced a spectacular revival with figures like Qualitinger, Sowinetz, Rühm, and Artmann, situated in modern media. For some time now, a moritat musician and street singer named VOODOO JÜRGENS has been drawing significant attention here with great success.
With the Tiger Lillies, a British trio has been reminding us of this dark yet quirky-humorous tradition for over 30 years.
