Antlaß Singing 2026

Time and again, the faithful pilgrimage to the Calvary during Lent, especially in the last days of Holy Week.
The chapel was built in 1696 by the "Brotherhood of the Agony of Christ," promoted by the Jesuits - a mass congregation.
Traunkirchen was home to the first Calvary of the Salzkammergut. It is understandable that traditions from the time of the Jesuits are still preserved and alive among the people of Traunkirchen. Aside from the silence of the bells from Maundy Thursday to Holy Saturday, there is "adoration" from the evening service on Maundy Thursday until midnight.
Starting at 9 PM on Maundy Thursday, the faithful walk through the village for the "Antlaßsingen." Antlaß means fear, the fear of Christ's death.
At twelve different locations, the population is urged to remember the suffering of Christ and to refrain from sin.
A cantor announces the hour: "Ladies and gentlemen, let it be known, the hammer has struck…."
The choir begins, remembering the stations of suffering:
At 9:00 PM: "Jesus is captured...."
At 10:00 PM: "Jesus is condemned...."
At 11:00 PM: "Jesus is scourged...."
At 12:00 AM: "The crowning with thorns...."
At 1:00 AM: "The carrying of the cross...."
At 2:00 AM: "The crucifixion...."
At 3:00 AM, as dawn begins: “Behold Jesus, as he completes the temporal, sending his soul to the heavenly Father.”
After returning from this last round through the village on Maundy Thursday night, the "24 Hours" are sung, recounting the course of Christ's suffering in a 16-stanza ballad-like song.
