When the tranquility of winter settles over Southern Styria, one might get the impression at first glance that time stands still here. But don't worry – there is plenty happening in Southern Styria, especially in winter. In the cellars of the wineries, work continues during the cold months following the grape harvest, as the new vintage needs to be created and requires a lot of attention from the winemakers and their helpers.

A traditional business since 1495
The Kollerhof of the Lieleg family in Leutschach has a long history connected to viticulture. First mentioned in documents in 1495, this charming winery has been in family ownership since 1728. As one might expect, the leading grape varieties of Southern Styria, such as Welschriesling, Gelber Muskateller, and others, are primarily cultivated here with great care. Winemaker Harald not only has deep roots in tradition but also acts with a forward-looking approach, as evidenced by his increased planting of PiWi (fungus-resistant) varieties like Muscaris, Blütenmuskateller, Donauriesling, and others.

It was climate change that motivated the award-winning winemaker to make this shift. The advantages are clear: up to 80% less plant protection products are needed, the hazardous work in steep vineyards is reduced, and the vines become more frost-resistant.
