"When it is performed in Vienna, it will surely be the biggest theater scandal of the Second Republic!" When Elfriede Jelinek announced her then youngest play, a "wicked farce with song," in 1981, she could not have imagined that the BURGTHEATER would establish its reputation as a "nest polluter" even without the originally planned premiere at the Burgtheater. A famous acting family, grumbling and murmuring in a murderous artistic language: For the Swiss director and artistic director of the Vienna Festival, Milo Rau, to whom Jelinek has now exclusively granted the rights for a late premiere at the Burgtheater, these will only be some of the starting points for a larger scenic panorama: Publicity and adaptation, history (of the BURG, of theater, and of Europe), fascism, and repression.
