Millions of children know the Gruffalo and his story: Various animals want to eat the little mouse. To protect herself, she invents a forest monster that suddenly becomes real. Initially a threatening creature, the Gruffalo is also outsmarted by the mouse.
How many times has the central rhyme been read aloud? "Oh no, oh dear, I'm so scared, / he really exists, the Gruffalo!" – this is what is said upon the monster's appearance. Since 1999, the Gruffalo has been a huge success. The children's book by Julia Donaldson has been translated into more than 100 languages and dialects worldwide. More or less frightening, yet lovingly illustrated by Axel Scheffler, the Gruffalo, along with the Gruffalo's Child and other characters, has been part of the picture universe created by Donaldson and Scheffler for over 25 years. Playful and colorful, they tell stories of courage, self-confidence, overcoming fears, friendship, and solidarity. The language is simple and rhymed. The exhibition showcases around 70 original illustrations, sketches, and preparatory works that depict the creation of these worlds.

Before the Gruffalo, the creative duo Donaldson-Scheffler had already worked together for seven years. Julia Donaldson develops the ideas for their joint books and shapes them into rhythmic texts with refrain-like repetitions. Axel Scheffler receives the manuscripts through the publisher and then lets them inspire his illustrations. Often, outsider figures are the heroes of the stories, such as a lively twig in "Stick Man" or a clever duck who outsmarts the thieving "Rogue Rat." This playfully conveys the confidence that even those who do not conform to common norms can be appreciated. Surprising twists often lead to the core of the story.
