Jazzambach: Norma Winstone & Kit Downes

With Norma Winstone, the grande dame of European jazz singing, Jazzambach 2026 will experience a conclusion of exceptional brilliance. Together with pianist Kit Downes, she presents herself in a fascinating, intergenerational duo constellation – delicate, profound, and full of lyrical power. Norma Winstone – known among other things for the trio Azimuth with John Taylor and Kenny Wheeler – is more artistically present than ever at over 80 years of age. As someone who sees herself not only as a jazz singer but also as a lyricist, she brings her poetic sensitivity to new pieces by Downes as well as compositions by Carla Bley, Ralph Towner, and John Taylor on the album "Outpost of Dreams," released by ECM in 2024, giving them a new dimension.

Kit Downes, in turn, is one of the most exciting pianists (and organists) in Europe – he recently won the German Jazz Prize 2025 in the category of keyboard instruments. He impresses with a deep musical intuition and a playing style that is sensitive to every nuance on one hand, while also showcasing extraordinary creativity that comes to life anew in each project. As finely as he accompanies, his introductions, interludes, and postludes are equally striking.

Together, the two take the leap over musical "cliffs" in every concert, revealing the essence of the songs with a special sensitivity for phrasing, timing, and text design – inviting the audience on an intimate musical stroll where listening becomes an experience.
