Being Suspended in Language
The Turkish poet Bejan Matur and the Syrian-born author Hamed Abboud navigate their highly poetic texts between different cultures. Their literature resists silence and forgetfulness.
Bejan Matur, born in 1968 in the ancient Hittite city of Kahramanmaraş, is considered one of the most influential voices in contemporary poetry in her country. Her poems have been translated into over 40 languages and have received numerous awards.
Hamed Abboud, born in 1987 in Deir ez-Zor, Syria, studied telecommunications technology in Aleppo. Abboud fled to Austria via Turkey at the end of 2012 and now lives in Vienna. His most recent works include: 'Stories Hidden in My Beard' (2020), 'My Many Fathers' (2023), 'Green Tea – Black Life' (2026; all titles published by Edition Korrespondenzen).
