A Midsummer Night's Dream - Regional Theatre Bregenz

The night is warm and full of magic, the forest mysterious, shadows whispering, light dancing between the trees: In Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, dream and reality, desire and confusion, order and anarchy intertwine. Love stumbles, sways, finds itself anew – nothing remains as it was. Four young people are drawn into the forest, driven by longing and curiosity, by passion and jealousy, by feelings they cannot fully grasp. They seek each other, lose each other, are manipulated and deceived. Meanwhile, the fairy queen Titania and her husband Oberon are caught in a power struggle that also subjects the humans to its enchantment, pulling them into a whirlpool, upheaving their world. And in the midst of it all: a troupe of craftsmen trying to perform a play – a grotesque parody of the great tragedy of love, while chaos rages around them.

Yet, as dreamlike as this forest may seem: the magic merely reveals what already slumbers within the people. It amplifies, confuses, brings to light what lies hidden. And Shakespeare plays with the rules of society – he breaks them, twists them into the absurd, discards them, only to ultimately capture them again. The lovers return to their world, but they have crossed through the forest, they have seen each other, transformed, experienced that love is not a fixed state, but a constant becoming. A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM is a dance on the narrow ridge between reason and ecstasy, between control and surrender. The world demands order – yet love follows only its own laws.
