The Success Story

It is arguably the greatest love story of all time and celebrated spectacular successes in Vienna as a musical. 20 years later, Romeo & Julia finally returns to Vienna in a staged concert version!

“ROMEO AND JULIA – The Musical” is the first musical production by Gérard Presgurvic based on the original story by William Shakespeare about the 400-year-old – yet eternally young – material. The spectacular production became THE musical event in France after its world premiere on January 19, 2001, at the Palais de Congrès in Paris, captivating audiences worldwide with over 11 million visitors to date. From the European metropolis of Paris, the production toured France and then continued to Canada, the United Kingdom, Scandinavia, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Hungary, Russia, the Philippines, Japan, China, and in 2005 made its German-language premiere in Vienna.

Back in Vienna after 20 years – the Cast

The celebrated lead actors back then were Marjan Shaki & Lukas Perman – and they will bring the musical hit to life in a staged concert version on November 13 & 14, 2026, at the Wiener Stadthalle, Hall F.

Alongside audience favorites from the 2005/06 production like Carin Filipčic (Nurse), Mark Seibert (Tybalt), Mathias Edenborn (Benvolio), Peter Lesiak (Mercutio), and Norman Stehr (Prince), new artists will also take on additional roles.

The role of Romeo will be played by rising star Lukas Mayer (among others, “Death” in Elisabeth). Debuting alongside him is the enchanting Amelie Sarich as the newcomer in the role of Julia. Other top castings include musical stars Annemieke van Dam and André Bauer as Lady and Lord Capulet.

The former title characters of the musical will appear in 2026 as the initiators, producers, and organizers, responsible for the artistic implementation.

Marjan Shaki: “There are roles that are timeless and can be played at any age. Romeo & Julia represent the first, innocent, devoted love… At 45 years old and with 20 years of my Romeo by my side, as well as four children together, we want to leave this task to young and fresh talents, to authentically present this unique love story to the audience.”

Lukas Perman: “One must always explore when the right time is for something. And for us, now is the right time to revive this wonderful French musical in Vienna with the orchestration and German translation from 2005/2006 – in a different role: as organizers & producers.”

Romeo & Julia 2025 – magical music and sand painting

After its great success in France, Romeo & Julia was performed for the first time in German at the Raimund Theater in Vienna in February 2005 and was sold out until June 2006. In addition to a gold record for the cast album, the single release of the song “Your eyes are my river” (Love) – interpreted by Marjan Shaki & Lukas Perman – reached number 3 on the Austrian charts at the time and was nominated for the Amadeus award.

“Ruler of the World,” “Look, she loves,” “Have you heard,” or “Love” are among the most famous hits from the Franco-pop musical hit.

The staged concert version for the 20th anniversary at the Wiener Stadthalle will present all the music from the Vienna version of 2005/06 in orchestral arrangement according to Christian Kolonovits, in German with the translation by Michaela Ronzoni. The story of Romeo & Julia will be illustrated and visually represented live by the exceptional artist Irina Titova – The Queen of Sand – through the magical art of sand painting.
