On Spark Sunday, the Chrochner (schoolchildren) and the Fachilischwinger (boys who set up the spark) go from house to house, reciting their little rhyme and wishing you good luck. In the evening, with the burning of the spark, winter is symbolically driven away. You can easily remember the date: Spark Sunday always falls on the first Sunday of Lent. The spark fire – simply called "spark" – is an old fire tradition that is still widespread in the Swabian-Alemannic region today. A wooden tower is erected around the spark tree, which is then set on fire. Since 2010, the Vorarlberg spark tradition has been recognized as an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO in Austria.
