Manzoni's novel is set in the years 1628–1630 in the Duchy of Milan, as well as in the neighboring Bergamo, which belonged to the Republic of Venice. It tells the story of two young people, Renzo and Lucia, who live in a village near Lecco by Lake Como and want to get married, but are prevented and pursued by the local feudal lord Don Rodrigo, who has set his sights on Lucia. As a result, they must flee their village. From there, many exciting adventures unfold that are reminiscent of the novel Les Miserables.
