On the Way
Cuban star pianist Marialy Pacheco comes to Bad Schallerbach for the first time! With the program "On the Way," she presents a musical journey through Latin America, tailoring the exact sequence to the mood and atmosphere of the evening. The audience can expect a mix of original compositions and arrangements of Latin American composers, such as Ernesto Lecuona, Antonio Rumeo, or Moises Simons, all performed in a jazzy, Latin American style and moderated by Marialy Pacheco.
Marialy Pacheco
Marialy Pacheco won the Montreux Solo Piano Competition in 2012, becoming the first woman to do so in its 15-year history. In the words of jury chairman Leszek Mozdzer: "Deciding between the three contenders was tough. In the end, the contestants’ joy in performing and her authenticity guided our decision making." Born in Havana in 1983, Marialy Pacheco grew up in a musical family and received classical piano lessons at the Conservatorio Alejandro García Caturla from an early age. At 15, she attended the Escuela Nacional de Artes, followed by a three-year composition study with Tulio Peramo at the Instituto Superior de Artes in Havana. In 2002, she won the Cuban Jo-Jazz competition, where Grammy winner Chucho Valdes served as jury chairman.
Since April 2013, Marialy Pacheco has lived in Germany and has performed at renowned national and international festivals such as the Montreux Jazz Festival, Aalener Jazzfest, Enter Music Festival, St. Moritz Art Masters, Piano City Milano, Rheingau Music Festival, Dresden Music Festival, Kissinger Sommer, ZMF Freiburg, Audi Jazz Festival, Ingolstadt Jazz Days, and the Beethovenfest Bonn. On the occasion of Bösendorfer's 185th anniversary, Marialy Pacheco performed at the Musikverein Vienna in October 2013. In 2014, she was appointed the official "Bösendorfer Artist," becoming the first and only jazz pianist worldwide to hold this title.
With a guest appearance with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra in Australia, she showcased another facet of her musical diversity, debuting as a soloist with Bach's G minor piano concerto under the direction of Gustavo Gimeno in Brisbane that summer. In spring 2014, Marialy Pacheco released her first German CD production "Introducing," featuring special guests such as trumpeter and Echo Jazz Award winner Joo Kraus and percussionist Rhani Krija (STING). In January 2016, an exclusive and limited solo vinyl album was released, produced as a live studio concert using analog recording techniques.
In June 2016, Marialy Pacheco presented the project "Danzon Cubano" together with the WDR Funkhausorchester, which was performed in September 2016 at the Beethovenfest in Bonn, among other venues. She also appeared as a soloist at the Rheingau Music Festival with the "Cuban European Orchestra" under the direction of Thomas Hengelbrock. In January 2017, Marialy Pacheco was a soloist with the legendary Babelsberg Film Orchestra as part of the "Ladies Jazz Night" series at the sold-out Nikolaisaal in Potsdam. The new album "DUETS" was released in April 2017, an intimate and multifaceted album featuring her favorite musicians and friends, such as Hamilton de Holanda, Omar Sosa, Joo Kraus, Rhani Krija, Miguel Zenon, and Max Mutzke.
In summer 2017, she returned to the Montreux Jazz Festival and made her debut at the legendary Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club in London. With the WDR Funkhausorchester under the direction of Gordon Hamilton, Marialy presented the project "Danzon Cubano" again in September 2017, performing to sold-out audiences at the Cologne Philharmonie and the Festsaal during the International Jazz Festival in Viersen. In January 2018, Marialy performed at an exclusive concert at the ambassador's residence in Havana Jazz Festival, as well as at the Port au Prince Jazz Festival in Haiti, commissioned by the German Embassy and the Goethe Institute. In June 2018, she made her debut at the "Kissinger Sommer" in the sold-out Rossini Hall. In March 2019, she performed with the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra and the Philharmonie Konstanz. The new album "Danzon Cubano – Live in Viersen" was released in May 2019, featuring a live recording from the concert with the Marialy Pacheco Trio and the WDR Funkhausorchester under the direction of Gordon Hamilton at the International Jazz Festival in Viersen.

Despite the pandemic, Marialy was able to give a few exclusive concerts in 2020, including a duo performance with Max Mutzke at the Leverkusen Jazz Days and as a soloist with the "Danzon Cubano" program with the orchestra of the Landestheater Coburg.
In 2021, she also performed concerts with Max Mutzke at the Kissinger Sommer, the Dresden Music Festival, and the Cultural Summer in North Hesse. She also performed in a duo with Omar Sosa at Jazzbaltica, at the Enter Enea Festival in Poznan, and at the Jazz Festival in Rome. In 2022, she released two major albums: MANOS, a live duo album with Cuban pianist Omar Sosa, released in April, and "RELOAD," a trio album showcasing the music and culture of Cuba and Latin America. Guests included Avishai Cohen (double bass), Nils Wülker (trumpet), Karl Perazzo (timbales), and Rhani Krija (percussion).
In 2024, she will again perform at renowned international festivals, concert halls, and clubs, including the Heidelberg Spring, the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival, with the State Philharmonic Rheinland-Pfalz in Ludwigshafen, as well as festivals in Madrid, Gran Canaria, Tenerife, and Fuerteventura.
