Who doesn't know the legend surrounding the creation of the Goldberg Variations? The story goes that Count Hermann Carl von Keyserlingk commissioned a piece of music from his friend Johann Sebastian Bach to help him through his sleepless nights. What emerged was not a gentle, soothing lullaby – no – but rather 30 variations that, due to their awe-inspiring technical challenges, require exceptional skill and are now considered part of the standard repertoire of Baroque music. Reinhard Führer takes on this virtuosic and technical challenge in the parish church of Schönbühel – a charming little gem that opens up a new sound space for the Baroque Days.
