Anyone who engages with the church buildings of Lower Austria from the second half of the 20th century will inevitably encounter the name Robert Herfert (1926–2011). The artist, who was trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Robin Christian Andersen and Herbert Boeckl, left numerous marks in public spaces as a painter, sculptor, and idealist. However, Herfert was more than just a designer – he was a questioner, a challenger: of material, church, and the spirit of the times alike.
