How are conflicts related to the climate crisis, environmental destruction, and pollution? How do wars and militarization impact the climate and the environment? How can environmental factors exacerbate wars – and when do they become enablers for peace? Although climate and environmental issues are increasingly disappearing from public debate, they are essential for our security. Therefore, it is also necessary to connect peace work with ecological engagement. But what can ecological peace work concretely look like? In this lecture, Sophia Stanger from the Austrian Centre for Peace sheds light on the connections between environment, climate, and peace using current examples, from Ukraine to Gaza to the Sahel region. You will learn about concrete approaches to ecological peace work, where there is still much commitment needed for a climate-just and peaceful planet – and where there is reason for hope. Admission to this event is free, and donations to cover costs are welcome.
