The Apocalypse

When "The Apocalypse" by Jury Soyfer was published in 1936, Austria was politically infiltrated by countless NSDAP members - and the annexation to Germany was only a matter of time. In the midst of this turmoil, the then 24-year-old wrote this cabaret-style play, creating a pitch-black, satirical document of the times that mercilessly parodies both high politics and the world of the common man (and woman). Ninety years later, politics and economics find themselves at a crossroads once again. While in 1936 Europe was at the center of Austrian perception with American calls, the globalized world is currently undergoing a political realignment. Today's technological possibilities were at best a utopia during Jury Soyfer's time; the potential and especially the dangers of social media, hybrid warfare, and perfected disinformation were unimaginable. These circumstances - along with the concept of station theater - prompted us to revise the original and add contemporary images and types of people. Some scenes have remained nearly unchanged, some have been gently adapted to the present, and much new material has been added, all seasoned with satire and dark humor. We have retained the brilliant core idea: What happens when one suddenly learns that a huge comet will crash into the Earth in three months?
