A novel that weaves highly relevant geopolitical themes with personal life stories: "The Pain of Choice" tells the story of three young men who meet by chance and whose life paths dramatically intersect amidst political interests, international power struggles, hope, and despair. The narrative spans from the election campaign for the 2016 U.S. presidential election to the post-war situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and on to the ongoing conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh. At the center are questions that still concern us today: Who wields power? What does it do to people? And what happens when ideals, loyalty, and truth collide? Franz Kepplinger reads selected scenes and provides insights into: the background of the novel, the real historical references, the emotional developments of the characters, and the question of why decisions sometimes become a "pain."
