Fifteen years, five albums, and countless beautiful songs, from "Die Liebe, da Dod und de aundan gfrasta" to "Ois vü leichta," spans the range of the 15th anniversary program of Martin Spengler & die foischn Wiener*innen. "Ois vü leichta," the fifth and current album by Martin Spengler & die foischn Wiener*innen, tells eleven stories—some with happy endings, most without, some have long since happened by the time the singer begins to tell them, and much remains vague, just as it is in life.
These are stories about love and the absence of it, about leaving and staying, and everything in between; about uncertainty within security and heaviness within lightness, or lightness within heaviness. Often, lurking behind the dance-like brightness of the songs is textual darkness and weight, a darkness in the shadow, a shadow that illuminates the background. It’s about threads that break, about endings that may be tied anew or that actually mark true endings.
And yet, it is not sadness, but great hope and a reconciliatory tone that permeates the new songs of Martin Spengler & die foischn Wiener*innen, perhaps the most beautiful songs they have written so far. Thus, MS&dfW enchant with dreamlike ease and fearless joy. And so, perhaps for a brief moment, "Ois vü leichta" truly becomes a reality.
