The Light Serenade has been part of the Oath Week in Ulm for decades. Thousands of red tea lights float down the Danube in the evening, marking a peaceful, traditional moment in Ulm's calendar of events. The Light Serenade has been an integral part of Ulm's Oath Week for more than 50 years. It always takes place on the Saturday before Oath Monday, which falls on the penultimate Monday in July. At nightfall, over 20,000 red tea lights are set afloat on the **Danube** at the entrance to the old town and collected again outside the city limits. The length of the light serenade depends on the flow velocity of the Danube and therefore varies from year to year. Numerous people gather along the banks to watch the lights pass by. The event does not thrive on staging, but on repetition and tranquility – which is precisely what makes it so appealing. As the prelude to Schwörwoche, the light serenade complements the other traditional events surrounding Schwörmontag and Nabada. It connects the city's history with the public space on the Danube and is an example of how traditions are still lived as a matter of course in Ulm today.
