On one Sunday each month, the Ulm Railway Friends Association, in collaboration with Dampfnostalgie Karlsruhe, organizes a steam train ride from Karlsruhe through the wild and romantic Murgtal valley to Baiersbronn during the summer. The journey begins at Karlsruhe Central Station. In Rastatt, we leave the Rhine Valley along the Murg River heading east, passing through Kuppenheim and Bad Rotenfels to Gaggenau and later to Gernsbach. The steam train continues past the Eberstein Castle, which towers high above the Murgtal, into the increasingly narrow valley, reaching Hilpertsau. From Weisenbach, the mountain railway character is emphasized by numerous bridges and tunnels. Particularly noteworthy is the Tennetschlucht Viaduct just beyond Langenbrand-Bermersbach, one of the few remaining original stone bridges. After passing Forbach with its characteristic church, Raumünzach, and Schönmünzach, the valley widens behind Schwarzenberg, and soon we reach the spa town of Baiersbronn over Klosterreichenbach, marking the end of our steam train journey. All steam trains are staffed and offer free bicycle transport. On each travel day, an additional ride from Baiersbronn to Raumünzach and back is offered. These trips are specifically designed for guests of the middle/upper Murgtal valley, allowing them to enjoy the ride on the historic train without having to travel to Karlsruhe. The departure time at Baiersbronn station is always at 1:48 PM, and the return to Baiersbronn station is at 3:04 PM. Tickets for these rides can be purchased directly on the steam train.
