The history of Achberg Castle ## Achberg in the Middle Ages Little is known about the original medieval fortified castle that stood on the site of today's castle. It was the center and eponymous seat of the Achberg domain. A "castle at Achberg" was first mentioned in writing in 1335. The origins of today's castle complex date back to the 16th century. ## The Teutonic Order's Achberg Castle The Teutonic Order acquired the Achberg domain in 1691. The buyer was Landkomtur Franz Benedikt von Baden. From 1693 to 1700, he had the castle magnificently expanded in keeping with his aristocratic lifestyle. After that, Achberg Castle fell silent. Until 1805, the ecclesiastical order of knights used the building only sporadically. ## The Hohenzollern-Prussian period During the political upheavals of the Napoleonic era, the Principality of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen acquired the Achberg domain in 1806. From 1849/50, Achberg formed the southernmost part of Prussia. ## The rescue of Achberg Castle The castle remained in the private ownership of the House of Hohenzollern until 1982. After its sale, the property became the subject of construction speculation. In 1988, the district of Ravensburg acquired the castle. From 1989 to 1994, the State Office for the Preservation of Historical Monuments carried out a model renovation of Achberg Castle. The [“Fördergemeinschaft zur Erhaltung von Schloss Achberg e.V.”](https://schloss-achberg.de/team-partner-freunde/foerderverein) (Association for the Preservation of Achberg Castle) supported the restoration and revitalization of this Baroque cultural monument. Achberg Castle has been open to the public since spring 1995 and offers its visitors a rich cultural program every year from spring to fall.
