Hermann Hesse's Garden in Gaienhofen – Then and Now Hermann Hesse laid out a large self-sufficient garden on the meadowland surrounding his house, planting berries, vegetables, fruit trees, and numerous flower beds. It is the first and only garden that he designed from scratch and laid out himself. He merely modified later gardens in Bern and Montagnola. The uniqueness of his garden is the reason for its reconstruction and interpretation by the current owner. Under expert guidance, visitors are shown not only the north garden, which has been recreated according to Hesse's own plans and explained in detail, but also the restored south garden, which is also based on historical foundations: here, the old varieties of flowers and useful plants that were already found in Hesse's garden grow in traditional beds as a small variety ark.
