Experience on-site how real Haller brine is transformed into genuine salt in a reconstructed boiling pan, complete with plenty of smoke and fire, creating the "White Gold of the Middle Ages." On October 19, 2025, you can witness this process. Even the Celts operated a saltworks at the salt spring in pre-Christian times. In the Middle Ages, the "white gold" fostered the development of the settlement, granting it prestige and prosperity, and significantly contributing to Hall's status as a Free Imperial City. For centuries, the brine—salty water—was drawn from the Hahl spring and heated by the salt workers in large iron boiling pans until enough water evaporated, allowing the salt to be skimmed off. Through the sale of salt at the salt markets and the associated trade, the city became wealthy and turned into an architectural gem. Salt production in Schwäbisch Hall ended in 1924, but the still bubbling saltwater, with its healing properties, is still used today in the modern brine bath.
