Christmas Pewter Casting

At this year’s Christmas pewter casting event, participants can cast various Christmas ornaments under the guidance of experienced pewter casters. The tradition of pewter casting, especially during the Christmas season, dates back a long way and has its origins in ancient crafts that have been passed down through generations in many regions of Europe. Pewter, an easily malleable metal, has been used since the Middle Ages to make tableware, jewelry, and decorative objects. This tradition is lovingly preserved at the Weygang Museum. In the run-up to Christmas, it’s a special experience to create your own little works of art—such as angels, stars, Christmas trees, or other Christmas motifs—that not only decorate the Christmas tree but are often given as special gifts. The atmosphere of tin casting is characterized by craftsmanship, patience, and a certain magic. When the molten tin is poured into the molds and, after a short time, cools into solid, silvery-shining Christmas tree ornaments, visitors are amazed anew every time. This tradition combines craftsmanship with festive customs and creates memories that are passed down from generation to generation. The museum café invites you to linger with homemade cakes, coffee, and punch; there’s also a craft program for children.
