Four singers and one instrumentalist will perform motets, songs, and dance pieces by contemporary composers and anonymous masters. Cantus München has transformed historical events into a musical program. Although the peasants could not read or write, they could dictate their experiences to peasant leaders or urban scribes who acted politically on their behalf. Such episodes were set to a popular melody - and the song was complete. A similar genre is the tenor song, masterfully shaped by Ludwig Senfl (around 1490 - 1543) and Paul Hofhaymer (1459 - 1537), which hardly tells of current politics but rather of love, courtly envy, or amusing events. A third common thread throughout the concert program is contemporary instrumental music that was danced to. This "pop music" was played with bagpipes, one-handed drums, shawms, and flutes. Finally, Latin motets from the "Papal Church" will be heard, as well as the chorales of the early Protestant movement, some of which are still sung today. The program concludes with a plea for peace: "Da pacem, Domine" and "Verleih' uns Frieden." Admission: €18.00
