By Franz Xaver Ott A piece about the great divide between the privileged and the "common man," about right and wrong, power and powerlessness, a popular uprising, and the legacy of the Twelve Articles, which are considered one of the first written demands for human and civil rights in Europe. In the "Twelve Articles," the peasants articulate in March 1525 what they demand as fundamental rights from those in power. They seek civil rights, participation, a fair tax system, and a just judiciary. They want to break free from serfdom, to escape the dependencies that lead to economic hardship and social misery. Craftsmen and the common townsfolk also join in the demands. Under the banner of the Bundschuh, the protesters march through the land with chants and songs against the Swabian League (nobles, dukes, imperial cities, clergy) and present their claims. However, the uprising is brutally suppressed by the authorities with the help of mercenaries.
