Zoological City Garden Karlsruhe The unique combination of the Zoological City Garden Karlsruhe, consisting of a zoo and park landscape, captivates over a million visitors each year. Located in the heart of the city, this green oasis invites you to experience nature with its historic tree population, colorful floral arrangements, themed gardens, and water features, as well as to discover and learn about a variety of animal species from all continents. The Zoological City Garden consists of the city garden with its many thematic gardens and areas, as well as the embedded zoo with its numerous animal enclosures. With 22 hectares, it is the largest urban park area. This diverse offering is complemented by gastronomy and children's playgrounds. The director is Dr. Matthias Reinschmidt. In the city garden, you can find about 800 impressive trees from many countries, 15,000 roses in 130 varieties, many tulips and summer flowers, perennials, and climbing plants. The Japanese garden, a miniature landscape with a Shinto shrine, stone lions, and a pagoda, is also famous. The city garden is home to over 4,000 animals of 250 species – from elephants to small meerkats. The animal world is presented in themed areas. In the newly designed "Habitat Water" area from 2009, sea lions, seals, and penguins have their enclosures. The naturally designed enclosures represent a coastal landscape with rocky cliffs and offer observers fascinating insights through underwater viewing windows. Right next to it is the tundra landscape of the polar bear enclosure. Here, too, the animals can be observed while diving and swimming through underwater windows. Many large and small classics of the animal worlds of Africa can be admired in three large enclosures – the "African Savannah." On the eastern slope of Lauterberg, the "Mountain World Himalaya" has been opened. Here, among others, the rare snow leopards have their large attractive enclosure, where they feel comfortable. Since 2015, the exotic house with around 2,000 animals has expanded the zoo's offerings. Here, birds, bats, white-faced sakis, and two-toed sloths can be experienced and admired up close.
