In the Footsteps of Vaihingen's History

A Guided Tour with Monika Bräuninger Vaihingen an der Enz was granted town status in the 13th century and, thanks to its favorable location, quickly developed into an important regional center. The town was situated along the important Speyer–Cannstatt–Ulm–Augsburg highway, a central trade and transportation route of the Middle Ages. Merchants, artisans, and travelers fueled economic growth and shaped urban life for many centuries. A profound turning point in the town’s history was marked by the devastating fires of the 17th century, which destroyed large parts of the built-up area. During the subsequent reconstruction, the multitude of half-timbered buildings that still define the town today were erected, lending the townscape its distinctive character. Despite all the destruction, the medieval city layout has been preserved and remains clearly visible to this day. On a walk through the Old Town, visitors can discover not only the half-timbered houses but also the remains of the former city walls. Two striking fortification towers serve as impressive reminders of the city’s former defensive strength and offer insight into the fortifications of bygone eras.
