Over 20 museums, galleries, and other cultural venues will present a wide variety of projects and works as part of the event series until October 19, 2025. Art students from the Hochschule für Gestaltung (HfG) and the State Academy of Fine Arts Karlsruhe are combining art and technology in media art projects and kinetic installations. Engineering knowledge and aesthetics merge in an exhibition by KIT professor Thomas Ummenhofer, creating a new visual language of steel. The institutes of the Faculty of Architecture will illuminate how closely the city of Karlsruhe and KIT are architecturally connected. The Laboratory for Electron Microscopy at KIT offers insights into the world of microscopic structures of plants. Additionally, workshops during the summer academy by Studio Blaupause and participatory performances invite engagement. KUNST | SOMMER | TECHNIK is aimed at people of all ages and invites them to rediscover art and technology.

Kick-off event for the series "Art | Summer | Technology" on July 11, 2025, at ZKM Karlsruhe

On Friday, July 11, 2025, at 6 PM, the event series "Art | Summer | Technology" will kick off at the Center for Art and Media (ZKM) Karlsruhe. This interdisciplinary series is part of the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and focuses on the diverse connection between art and technology. Over 25 institutions in Karlsruhe will participate with exhibitions, discussions, performances, and other formats. The uniqueness of this event series lies in the diversity of the participating actors: museums, universities, galleries, art and cultural institutions, as well as technical institutes, shops, and urban initiatives will contribute their perspectives. This makes KIT visible in the urban space and engages in an open dialogue with the city society on the theme of art and technology.

The opening event will be moderated by Dr. Isabel Gallin (KIT), project manager of Art | Summer | Technology, and will feature a diverse program: welcome speeches by Prof. Dr. Thomas Hirth, Vice President for Innovation and International Affairs at KIT, Dr. Albert Käuflein, Mayor of the city of Karlsruhe responsible for culture, and Dr. Klaus Nippert (KIT), who will give a lecture on the significance of cultural education in the technical training of mechanical engineering at KIT 200 years ago. Artistic impulses will be provided by interludes from the Badisches Staatsballett. A panel discussion on the interaction between art and technology will include Alistair Hudson, Director of ZKM, Yvonne Hohner, gallery owner, Rebecca Müller, artist and surgeon, and Raimondo Rebeck, head of the Badisches Staatsballett. The locations and dates of all events between July 11 and October 19, 2025, will be available on the website: [LINK to follow]. Additionally, the KIT Event App will provide a digital overview of the entire program, including daily updates and location information. [downloadable here] Admission to the opening event is free, and interested individuals are warmly invited.

By bicycle to art and technology: Gallery event on July 12, 2025, in Karlsruhe

On Saturday, July 12, 2025, a special gallery event will take place in downtown Karlsruhe and the Südstadt as part of the "Art–Summer–Technology" series starting at 2:00 PM. This event series accompanies the 200th anniversary of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and highlights the diverse connections between art and technology. The afternoon will focus on seven exhibition venues, including six Karlsruhe galleries that will present specially curated exhibitions on the theme of "Art and Technology." The works on display will offer various artistic perspectives on technological developments, societal innovations, and design processes. Some exhibitions will also have accompanying catalogs; further information can be found on the websites of the participating galleries. The program will be complemented by a specially arranged exhibition at the Regierungspräsidium at Rondellplatz, where four students from the State Academy of Fine Arts Karlsruhe will present site-specific installations addressing questions of spatial perception, materiality, and technology.

The gallery event is designed as a guided bicycle tour. The meeting point is at 2 PM in front of the town hall, Karl-Friedrich-Strasse 10, on the marketplace in Karlsruhe. From there, two groups will start: one route will lead to the galleries along the Zirkels and in the city center (Galerie Schrade, Galerie Rottloff, Regierungspräsidium at Rondellplatz), while the other will head to the Südstadt (Galerie Burster, Galerie Yvonne Hohner Contemporary, PAW, Galerie Meyer Riegger). The tours will be accompanied by Dr. Albert Käuflein (Mayor of the city of Karlsruhe), Britta Wirtz (Managing Director of Messe Karlsruhe and Chairwoman of the Friends and Supporters of art Karlsruhe e.V.), and Dr. Isabel Gallin (KIT), project manager of Art | Summer | Technology. Following the bicycle tour, there will be an opportunity for informal exchange at Bistro Le Renard in Waldstraße 60 starting at 4:00 PM. Visitors can share impressions, continue conversations, and network with the participants during a get-together. Admission to the gallery event is free, and interested individuals are warmly invited to hop on their bicycles and join in!
