Thomas Mann's lifelong struggle with love, life, and literature. Dr. Tilmann Lahme, born in 1974, is a literary historian and author. This comprehensive evaluation of Mann's life and work was published in June 2025 to mark the 150th anniversary of Thomas Mann's birth and received high praise from critics immediately upon its release. It compellingly demonstrates, based on new sources, the high price that the great word artist, Nobel laureate, family patriarch, and representative of a better, democratic Germany had to pay during the National Socialist era for his admirable achievements in life: in the form of great self-discipline and, moreover, through the denial and struggle against his innermost inclinations, with this inner conflict ultimately becoming fruitful for his work. However, the significant political achievements in the second half of his life also had to be fought for by overcoming a political worldview that he cherished but had outlived. The fields of tension in which Thomas Mann operated were immense. He suffered from this and was often unhappy despite his extraordinary success. Dr. Tilmann Lahme, born in 1974, is a literary historian and author. He has worked, among other things, as an editor in the feuilleton of the "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung" and taught in a professorship for literary studies at the University of Lüneburg. Lahme is the author of numerous publications about the Mann family, including a highly praised biography of Golo Mann (2009) and the bestseller "The Manns: A Family History" (2015).
