Weingarten Season: Lawrence Power & Munich Chamber Orchestra

Deutsche Zentrale für Tourismus e.V.

Abt-Hyller-Straße, 88250 Weingarten

The cooperative concert is part of the festival weit! neue musik weingarten 2025. This year's composer portrait weit! is dedicated to Enno Poppe, one of the most important representatives of contemporary music. A year earlier, his solo version of "Filz" with Tabea Zimmermann could be experienced in the Rococo salon of the Schlössle; in this concert, "Filz" is presented as a viola concerto featuring the internationally renowned violist Lawrence Power. It consists mainly of precisely played micro-intervals, intonation fluctuations, and virtuosic glissandi. The solo part for the viola is a single flowing intonation curve with a constantly changing contour and strong expressiveness. "Wald" by Enno Poppe from 2010 is a work for four string quartets. The four strings of the string instruments, four instruments from each quartet, and four string quartets together form a meta-instrument of 43 = 64 strings, which perform in double-choir formations as well as in varying solo and tutti constellations in single, double, triple, and quadruple quartets. Contemporary music is combined with Baroque music from the Bach family. In the popular Brandenburg Concerto No. 3, the first-class Lawrence Power will play the solo viola. And in the virtuosic Symphony in G major by CPE Bach, the famous son of the even more famous father ventures into musical new territory. His Symphony op. 182 is among the most interesting and challenging works of its kind. Contrast and surprise, as well as the constant change of affects, are not only the essential principles of this symphony but of the entire evening.
